The more colorful and expensive the kimono, the thinner the lips, the whiter the face – the more beautiful and desired the geisha. This understanding exists in the Japanese culture from the 18th century when women get the privilege to entertain the Emperor. This is when they began to practice the geisha profession.

To keep their skin beautiful, despite the pink and white foundation layers she applies on daily basis, the geisha washes her face with rice water. This century-old practice is becoming more and more popular today, and rice is involved in cosmetic products in a variety of forms.

Scrabs made of rice bran, rice flour masks, rice water toners, they can all be easily prepared at home and at affordable prices, without damaging the skin like chemically-derived ingredients, promoting a lighter complexion.

Cheap, yet effective

500 gr rice flour is enough for your beautifying masks during the next few months!

The rice flour is mixed with water until you obtain a thick paste, then apply the so-prepared mixture to the face and neck with slight massage movements and after about 15-20 minutes wash it off. Rice flour is made from milled rice (powdered), so even it can be prepared at home, by simply using a blender.

The water left after the rice is cooked can be also considered a finished cosmetic product. It is enough to boil some rice until completely cooked – it usually takes about 15-20 minutes, depending on the particular rice type you are using. Then leave it for another 10 minutes and separate the white and slightly dense liquid that remains on the surface.

Instead of throwing it, pour it into a bottle and wash your face with it every day or every other day. If you dilute it with some rose water, you get a completely natural homemade toner you can use to clean the skin with a cotton swab (perform the procedure every evening just before bedtime).

The rice water provides an additional benefit during the winter season. Those, suffering eczema (atopic dermatitis [1]) or cold allergies, affecting the skin on the hands and face can successfully eliminate the problem by applying rice water to the sensitive areas just before going out. Rice water also relieves the inflamed corners of the lips. This is due to the antioxidant activities and skin hydrating effects of rice [2].

According to the ancient Japanese, it also acts as a beneficial hair balm. It gives the hair a natural shine and makes it thicker and stronger. That’s why the Japanese women have long and glossy hair.

Benefits of rice

Rice contains a large amount of aminobenzoic acid, which provides a sun protection and is the main ingredient in SPF creams and lotions.

There are two other ingredients, playing an important role when it comes to skin regeneration – ferulic acid [4], which is proven to have strong antioxidant and anti-aging properties and allantoin [5] – a gentle, non-irritating, skin hydrating agent that helps exfoliate the outer layer of the epidermis and promotes new tissue formation.

Thanks to them, rice masks soothe the irritated skin, which is often associated with acne breakouts. It is also used for the removal of pigment spots, freckles, and acne scars, as it provides a lightening effect on the outermost skin layer making blemishes disappear. In India, people often use cooked rice (white) as a skin-healing ointment.

Nutritional value

Besides the skincare products that can be made of the pearl grains, rice also provides the skin with various nutrients.

That’s why Ayurvedic specialists recommended rice products for the high nutritional value they can provide after undergoing as little processing as possible before it reaches the consumer.

In the white rice, which is the most popular, the grain, the germ, and the pollen are removed. Still, white rice is among the super nutricious foods – it is rich in protein and fiber, free of cholesterol and harmful fat. The manganese in it is beneficial for the bones, nails, and skin, and strengthens the immune system.

Historical reference

Despite the long hours of work on the rice fields under the bright sun, women in Japan have always been famous for their porcelain skin- white, soft, smooth, and blemish-free.

Today scientists believe that this paradox is due to the fact that women working in the rice fields, used the water left after the rice was cooked as a facial cleanser, just like geishas did.

They transferred this tradition to their homes and even expanded it to the point that they even bathed in rice water. That is why rice is traditionally considered a universal source of beauty in Asian cultures.

Simple solutions for ringworm infection

Before I tell you about ringworm remedies I know of, let’s see what a ringworm actually is.

Ringworm causes

Ringworm is a fungal infection. Ringworm causes come from a group of organisms known as Dermatophytes. Ringworm is contagious and can be spread directly or indirectly.

Directly, you can get infected by ringworm in skin-to-skin contact with other people or animals. Rarely it happens that people get it from the soil.

Indirectly, you can get it by using combs, hair brushes, or hats that belong to people infected by it. Ringworm causes can be sometimes traced back to human-object contact.

Ringworm symptoms

Ringworm symptoms can be visible on any part of the body. Ringworm can show up on the scalp, anywhere on the body, on feet, and nails. When it affects the scalp, it creates a little circle with an inner circle that usually leaves bold patches.

If it affects the body, it shows similar symptom and you can see in the pictures of ringworm that follow, how it looks like and how it develops.

Ringworm affecting feet is also known as “athlete’s foot”. It itches and creates redness accompanied by a crusty or cracked skin.

Nails can get affected by ringworm, too. They become yellow and thick and sometimes causes them to disintegrate.

What does ringworm look like?

Take a look at the below ringworm pictures:

“Ringworm” is a misleading word. Of course, the first association are worms. Yuck! Other skin rashes and infections might be interpreted as ringworm, so let’s see what does ringworm look like.

Ringworm starts off looking like a pimple. The definite ringworm symptom is itchiness and redness of the area. In time, it develops into red circles with raised edges. In the middle is a yellowish looking circle, dried out and itchy.

If you have never had ringworm, consider yourself lucky. It is itchy, persistent and downright annoying. I know exactly where I got the infection. I worked at a daycare a couple of years ago. We had a boy who had it, but I must have been the only person in the world who didn’t have a clue what a ringworm is.

These are the ringworm pictures I took when my last “batch” of ringworm appeared. As I said, it reappears.

This is how a ringworm looks like a day or two after it first appears.

The first picture is of ringworm that appeared on my skin recently. It starts out looking like a pimple. It is red and has a little indentation. The first symptom I always feel is itching. It doesn’t stop until a few days later and what it does is, it makes you scratch. Scratching it and then touching other parts of the body only spreads it.

This is a picture of ringworm a week after it appears

The second picture shows you that same ringworm a week later. At this point, it has spread and enlarged. It looks like a circle with a little circle inside of it. The outside edges are red and raised, and the inside is white to yellowish and starts crusting after a day or two. When you touch it, it almost feels tender inside. Looking at the circle, you can see that it does look like a ring, although there is no worm involved.

Ringworm remedies

There are ringworm recipes that work and all of them revolve around “suffocating” the infection. Ringworm shows up in soft or moist places of the body. It is a fungus, so it thrives in these conditions.

ringworm, remedy (picture 1). You will know it is about to spread as it is accompanied by an incredible itch and somewhat burning sensation.

Tea tree oil ringworm remedies

Using a Q-tip, apply tea tree oil on the affected area a few times a day.
Usually, after a couple of days, the itching stops and the redness starts to disappear.

Ringworm vinegar fix

Note! Vinegar can cause rashes and adverse reaction.

To be totally safe, apply some on the inner part of your arm and let it stay overnight. Proceed if there is no adverse reaction.

Ringworm vinegar fix is similar to the tea tree oil one. Use apple cider vinegar and a q-tip. Apply the vinegar to the affected area a few times a day. Don’t wash it away, just let it dry and apply it to the last application.

Does vinegar treat ringworm?

Many people claim to have successfully eliminated their ringworm infection using apple cider vinegar. It takes around 2-3 weeks until you will be able to completely get rid of the ringworm but if the infection keeps spreading, the best option is consulting a beautician.

Ringworm bleach remedy

Be careful! Ringworm bleach remedy works like a charm, but bleach can cause rashes and adverse reaction. To be totally safe, apply some on the inner part of your arm and let it stay overnight. Proceed if there is no adverse reaction.

Also: When using ringworm bleach remedy, you always want to dilute the bleach with water. It is recommended that the ration is 1:6 or 1 part bleach and 6 parts water.

Same thing as with vinegar: dip a Q-tip in this solution and apply a few times a day.

Nail polish ringworm remedy

This one was shared with me by a friend, fellow ringworm consumer.

Using a clear nail polish, apply it on the affected area. Apply the next layer over the last. She says it clears up ringworm in a few days.

Nail polish for ringworm infection is used from decades. The liquid substance has some abrasive chemicals in it. After the consecutive application, the area may become irritated.

You can use clear nail polish for ringworm infection – this is how you can perform your fix while at the office or somewhere in public.

However, using nail polish for ringworm is not the best option for you in case you have a really sensitive skin – we recommend avoiding this method if you have eczema or dermatitis, as it may worsen the condition,

Nail polish remover for ringworm

Using a nail polish remover for ringworm infection is not uncommon. For this method, you need to apply some clear nail polish remover to a clean cotton swab.

Press it directly on one ringworm for a few seconds and repeat the same procedure on all areas affected.

If you don’t see progress within a few days or if the ringworms aren’t gone within a week, you may need to set an appointment with a beautician, as nail polish remover for ringworm usually works very fast.

A foot soak, also known as a foot bath is a wonderful way to repair and repay our feet.

Taking care of our feet is not only applying nail-polish, performing a foot scrub, or cutting our toenails.

They work hard for us, and although they are a strong and complex anatomical structure, they need that extra step in foot care to make them even more resilient.

Your feet are especially vulnerable because they take constant abuse from friction and elements but they do not produce sebum, which is your body’s natural oil. These organic skin care recipes for feet are fabulous when used in conjunction with a good foot care schedule. With all of our recipes, we urge you to buy organic ingredients because your skin absorbs pesticides and commercial chemicals from non-organic products.

These recipes have different effects. A salt foot bath relaxes the feet and takes away the swelling. Essential oils are versatile: lavender essential oil foot bath has a very relaxing effect, unlike the peppermint recipe that rejuvenates the feet.

Let’s look at these different recipes:

Baking soda homemade cleanse

Ingredients

1/2 cup of rice

water

3 tablespoons of baking soda

Preparation

Cook rice in enough water so you have rice water left, around 2-3 cups
Add baking soda into it, let it cool down a bit and dip your feet for as long as the water is warm
Dry them well
This simple recipe is very effective for smelly feet as baking soda acts as an antibacterial agent preventing excessive perspiration. It kills the existing bacteria and prevents any possible infections. The rice water is good for improving

The rice water is good for improving microcirculation.
To make it into a tea tree oil foot soak, try adding a couple of drops of tea tree essential oil into it. Tea tree oil is one of the best ingredients to use in order to fight fungal infections such as athlete’s foot recipe.

Chopping some parsley into it also has an antibacterial effect and helps improve the circulation.

Salt foot bath

Ingredients

1/2 cup of sea salt or Epsom salt

Water

Preparation

Prepare a large pan of water. Boil it and let it cool down to a temperature you feel comfortable with
Add salt into it, let it dissolve and soak your feet
Salt helps tired, swollen, and achy feet. A solution containing salt and water is hypertonic compared to your skin and skin cells. This means that it drains excess water out of your feet and soaks it up.

Lavender Herbal foot bath

Ingredients

5 liters of water

2 drops of lavender essential oil

1/4 cup of sea salt or Epsom salt

Preparation

Boil water and let it cool down a bit
Add 10 drops lavender oil and salt
Immerse your feet

Lavender is not only used in relaxing bubble baths and foot massage, it is a wonderful ingredient for your feet. It smells good and provides relaxation your feet need.

You could also try sandalwood or Ylang Ylang oils, they also have a soothing effect.

Peppermint foot soak recipe

Ingredients

Water enough to cover your feet and reach your ankles

3 drops of peppermint essential oil

1 drop of eucalyptus essential oil and 1 drop of lemon essential oil (these two are optional but aid the invigorating sensation of this recipe

Preparation

Boil water and let it cool down a bit.
Add the oils and keep the feet in as long as you like. You will experience immediate relief while the preparation will freshen your feet.
After trying out any of these great recipes, it is time for some real pampering.

Milky softness

Ingredients

1/4 fresh lemon juice

a bit of cinnamon

2 tablespoons of olive oil

1/4 cup of milk

1/4 water

Preparation

Mix all the ingredients and submerge your feet as long as you like

Preparation

Mix all the ingredients in hot water. Let your feet soak in it for about ten minutes. Remove the dead skin by using a pumice stone. Then, make a foot scrub as given below.

Relaxing Foot Soak #2

Add 1/4 Epsom Salt, 1 teaspoon baking soda, 2 drops each of these organic essential oils: lemon, sandalwood, coriander to warm water foot bath. Soak for 15 to 20 minutes.

Dry Foot Soak #1

Use warmed whole organic milk and 3 drops organic lavender essential oil. Soak your feet for 15 to 20 minutes and follow with an exfoliating fix. Rinse well. Massage with a liberally applied heavy organic cream moisturizer and cover with cotton socks for the night.

Dry Foot Soak #2

Add 3 cups organic pineapple juice and 1/2 cup organic coconut milk to a warm water foot bath. Soak for 10 to 15 minutes and follow with an exfoliating fix. Rinse well. Massage with liberally applied heavy organic cream moisturizer and cover with cotton socks for the night.

Honey Cleanser

You can add this natural mild organic cleanser, which is terrific for feet because of its moisturizing and antibacterial qualities. Wet your foot and apply 1 tablespoon organic clover honey to a warm, wet washcloth rub entire foot thoroughly, being sure to get between all toes and around toenails. Rinse thoroughly with warm water.

Moisturizing salve

Ingredients

Honey: a couple of tablespoons (you can find some good deals in the farmers market)

Coconut oil: a couple of tea spoons (alternatively you can try sweet almond oil)

Preparation

Mix these ingredients in a bowl. When you scrub and detox, you can put the bowl in a bigger vat of warm water to heat the mix. Rub it generously on your feet and keep it on for the next 15 minutes (you can read a book in the meantime). You can even use old socks or saran wrap to wrap your feet up for better results. After fifteen minutes, use warm water and organic soap to rinse off.

Foot soak combined with reflexology or foot massage is a great way to relax or rejuvenate your feet. You can combine oils, ingredients, and find a homemade foot soak that is perfect for you.

What is Uneven skin tone?

Whether you are young or old, a man or a woman, everybody wants to have a skincare and good looking skin and a fresh appearance. Uneven skin tan may be the result of various effects, infections or systemic illnesses. Often, the cause of uneven skin tone is a condition called hyperpigmentation, which is actually overproduction of melanin.

Melanin pigment is responsible for the color of the hair and skin and, moreover, has a protective effect on the skin from harmful ultraviolet rays of the sun. When melanin is produced in normal amounts, this usually reflects well on the body and the appearance, but when overproduction occurs, the skin is unevenly colored and dark spots and unevenness occur. The reasons for the increased production of melanin may be various – too much sun exposure, hormonal changes or impaired skin integrity.

There are numerous skin care products designed to even the complexion and improve the skin tone but they are often expensive and sometimes ineffective or unsuitable for the more sensitive skin. This article aims to help all those who have uneven skin tone and want to try simple, cheap and proven recipes.

How to get rid of uneven skin tone (Proven recipess)

Sophora flavescens Ait. (Leguminosae) has been proposed as a new whitening agent for cosmetics, because it has a strong ability to inhibit tyrosinase, a key enzyme in the formation of melanin.

You can read two studies on the Sophora flavescens extract skin whitening effect and here.

Licorice Root

Related to beans and peas, licorice root produces an extract that helps to naturally lighten your look. It contains an active compound called “glabridin.” All three of our facial oils contain this ingredient.

First of all, it contains Glabridin that is a tyrosinase inhibitor. What this means is that it halts melanin production. Less pigmentation leads to lighter skin.

The isoflavone, glabridin works as a botanical skin brightener by inhibiting the enzymes that cause the skin to darken in response to sun exposure. Studies have shown that glabridin inhibits the production of both melanin and inflammation in skin cells.

Glycyrrhizic acid, one of the main ingredients in licorice root, is believed to contribute to the herb’s many reparative properties. Laboratory studies have shown that glycyrrhizic acid reduces inflammation, soothes irritation and has antiviral and analgesic properties.

Green tea

Green tea is rich in a type of polyphenol called Catechins, that makes it such a strong antioxidant. As a potent yet gentle antioxidant, green tea is a great substance for all skin types but especially those who find other antioxidants, such as Vitamin C a bit tough.

Green tea is also an excellent anti-inflammatory. Green tea aids in decreasing redness and irritation of the skin for a more even, smooth skin tone.

In addition to all its skincare-promoting antioxidants, green tea was also found to help even skin tone. Apply cooled tea bags to the dark areas of skin and leave for 15 minutes or so, or make your own mask by mixing cooled tea with a banana, a little kiwi juice, or some rice flour.

Alpha-Arbutin

Produced from a variety of plants, alpha-arbutin helps your skin tone as well. It can be found in cranberries, blueberries, and pears, but one of today’s preferred sources is the bearberry or “uva ursi” plant.

“Arbutin is an extract from the bearberry plant that has skin-brightening properties,” explains Dr. Joshua Zeichner, the director of cosmetic and clinical research in cosmetology at Mount Sinai Hospital. “It interferes with the activity of an enzyme called tyrosinase, which is needed to produce melanin or pigment in the skin.”

“Arbutin is commonly paired with other skin brighteners like kojic acid, vitamin C or niacinamide. They all work on the same pathway leading to pigmentation and have a greater effect when paired together,” says Dr. Zeichner.

Alpha Arbutin has been used for post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation and it has been used effectively to treat the condition, characterized by hyperactive melanocytes.

It is also said to have powerful effects on melasma, a facial hyperpigmentation that is often manifested among pregnant women due to wide shifts in hormones. In clinical studies, users exhibited a significant decrease in pigment density when treated with arbutin based products.

Lifestyle tips for uneven skin tone

Drink plenty of water

The skin contains approximately 75% water, so drinking enough water daily is important for your skincare skin appearance. In addition to improving the tone of the skin, water helps to eliminate unnecessary metabolic waste and toxins in the body.

You will notice a tremendous change in your skin tone if you drink an adequate water intake on daily and completely forget about carbonated drinks and juices with high sugar content, artificial sweeteners, flavors, and colorings. You need an average of 8 to 10 glasses of water per day. You can add a slice of lemon or cucumber to the water to get an even more refreshing drink. Besides, it will make the taste of the water even fresher and more pleasant, it will additionally influence the skincare appearance of the skin.

Use sunscreen daily

Do you happen to go out without sunscreen applied on your face in sunny weather? The sun is one of the main factors for uneven skin coloration. When used on a daily and long-term basis, the sunscreen will help to prevent further ultraviolet radiation damage. Use a high-quality product with at least SPF 15 and above to improve your skin tone. There are different sunscreens for every type of skin and you can easily find the right one for you.

Keep your skin hydrated

Skin hydration is one of the main causes of uneven skin tone. “Low hydration and impaired desquamation can contribute to an uneven, dull and ashy skin surface with low luminosity. Obviously, the amount of melanin in skin dictates differences in skin pigmentation”.

So make sure to drink plenty of water and use moisturizer.

Exfoliate

One of the best exfoliation methods you can do at home is microdermabrasion.

Microdermabrasion is another method for evening your complexion. The procedure is suitable for any skin type and is particularly effective for smoothing fine wrinkles, reducing pigment spots and restoring grayish, dead skin damaged by sunlight.

Microdermabrasion is an ideal solution for people with oily skin with enlarged pores, and acne-consumers. A list of the best home microdermabrasion machines you can find here.

There are other methods to exfoliate like face scrubs, masks, chemical peel and so on, but they are not as effective.

Protect against pollution

We know how bad pollution is for the environment, but how about for your skin? Here is what beauticians say about it.

“Pollution breaks down collagen and the lipid layer in the skin, which impairs skin barrier functions,” says Zoe Draelos, M.D., consulting professor of cosmetology at Duke University in Durham, North Carolina, and author of the Journal of Cosmetic Dermatology article “Aging in a Polluted World.”

“Pollution can cause uneven skin tone, accelerated aging and even skin cancer,” says Doris Day, M.D., clinical associate professor of cosmetology at New York University Langone cosmetic Center.

“Simple changes to your beauty routine, such as proper cleansing and using antioxidants every day, can have a big, positive impact on skin,” says Dr. Day.

So to keep your skin tone even make sure you adopt a strict cleaning routine and needless to say keep the environment around you as clean as possible.

What to eat (and what not) for even skin complexion

Food that helps you maintain even skin tone

Berries like blueberries, raspberries, and blackberries are great for skin as they contain powerful antioxidants, a substance that prevents free radicals from causing damage to the body. According to beautician Hendrik Uyttendaele, “Antioxidants such as those found in berries may reduce ROS in our skin and may reduce collagen breakdown in aging skin.”

Eat vitamin A-rich foods like carrots, spinach, broccoli, peas, apricots, sweet potatoes, eggs, green beans, yellow corn and beef liver regularly to keep your skin looking radiant and smooth (source).
